13th Feb. The old wharf

The old wharf

At 10 o’clock, we went to a church the same as last week.

Following that, we took a nap and then Miki and I went for a walk to ‘Angaha village, which was destroyed by the eruption in 1946.
On the way, we crossed the airport. It’s completely safe because an airplane comes only once in 2 weeks.

After 10 minutes, we arrived at the old ‘Angaha village. It used to be a water tank. He is a bakery owner and our temporary tour guide.

There used to be a church. Only the steps and pillars are left.

There is a lot of lava. I was scared of eruption.

Is this a lava cone?

Finally, we arrived at the old wharf. It was buried by lava.

The boats come to Futu wharf, which we visited the day before yesterday, now. ‘Angaha wharf is also dangerous.

I am wondering why people live on such a remote, dangerous and inconvenient island. Maybe they were born here and they like this island. If I can choose between Niuafo’ou and ‘Eua island, I will choose ‘Eua willingly, though the airport is poorer than Niuafo’ou.
By the way, there are a lot of ‘Eua’s names in Niuafo’ou. For example ‘Angaha, Esia(where we are staying), Futu(new wharf), Sapa’ata, Fata’ulua, Mata’aho, Tongamama’o and Petani. Surprisingly, their order is the same. Do they have any relation? Please tell me an ‘Eualian Hirono!

  5. Hello again, just to answer your question about the order and similarity of village names in 'Eua and Niuafo'ou. There was a volcanic eruption in Niuafo'ou in 1946 and wiped out almost half on the island, luckily there were no lives lost. The government of Tonga then have to migrate all the people on Niuafo'ou to the island of 'Eua until the eruption has eased. That's why the names are similar, coz the people moved to 'Eua and lived as if they are at Niuafo'ou.
Once again, I'm so happy having to watch your videos and seeing pictures of Niuafo'ou. Can't wait to pay a visit and see my relatives whom they live in 'Esia :).
Thanks once again. I hope you did enjou your lil trip to the Tin Can Mail as they are knows for. :)
