↑Since my favorite restaurant, Little Tokyo, will have a leave for two months starting in July, I visited there but it was already closed. Oh man! Next time I come here it will be just before I leave Tonga.

 お気に入りのリトル東京レストランが７月から２ヶ月の休みに入るので来ました・・・が閉まっていました。おやまぁ。今度来る時は帰国直前ですねぇ。

 

 

↑After work, I visited the JICA dormitory and then I saw the new volunteers studying Tongan language. I looked back upon my training when I came to Tonga. My Tongan is as beginner level as ever.

  仕事の後、JICAドミトリーへ行きました。新隊員さんがトンガ語を勉強していました。トンガに来た頃のことを思い出しました。Torojiro先生のトンガ語は依然として初心者レベルです。

 

 

↑After that, I had dinner with Taki, who is in my group and has his Buddha face. The restaurant is new and is located in front of the JICA dormitory.

  その後、同期で仏の顔を持つ男Taki君と夕食を食べました。このレストランは新しく、JICAドミトリーの前にあります。

 

↑We can eat Chinese food for 5 pa’anga (250 yen).

  ５パアンガ（２５０円）程度で中華料理が食べられます。

 Sefoさんは山ネコのスタンプを４００枚の賞状へ押しました。お疲れ様です。

 

 

↑We wrapped a lot of gifts for the commended students. We finished two competitions’ gifts completely and finished half of the third competition’s one. We stuck it out!

  表彰式用の景品をたくさん包みました。２つの大会分は完璧に終わり、３つ目の大会も半分終わりました。よく頑張りました。

 

 

↑Around noon, I visited the post office and received the package from Japan, but…how terrible the box is!

 Although a seal says “Official Check”, I don’t know why they need to damage it like this.

  昼頃、郵便局で荷物を受け取りました。でも、ボロボロでした。シールには公式な検査と書かれてありますが、なぜこんなに傷つける必要があるのか分かりません。

 

↑Anyway, I got a new high-pressure pump for my extra bicycle. Welcome to Tonga.

  とにかく速いチャリの高圧空気入れを手に入れました。ようこそトンガへ。

↑In the morning, the lady Keleni came to CDU and received an abacus. She will teach abacus individually to her son. Good luck!

 朝、Keleniさんという女性がCDUに来ました。彼女は個人的に息子にそろばんを教えます。頑張ってください。

 

 

↑At lunch, we visited the fast food restaurant, whose name I don’t know and which is located in front of the restaurant, which may not have a name. We ordered hamburgers, French fries, curry & rice and so on. This boy will be good at hitting flies, because he was watching me hit 3 flies and was trying to do it too.

  昼に、名も無きレストランの向かいにある名前が分からないレストランに行きました。ハンバーガー、フライドポテト、カレーライスなどを注文しました。この少年はハエ叩き名人になるでしょう。何故ならTorojiro先生が３匹のハエを叩いているのを見ていて、挑戦しようとしていたからです。

 

 

↑At 4 o’clock, we had a meeting with the embassy. We determined that we will choose the Japanese abacus camp’s participant from the Tongan national competition next year and the embassy can pay money for the halls, gifts etc.

  ４時に大使館とのミーティングをしました。来年日本キャンプへ参加できる人をトンガの全国大会から選ぶことや、大使館が会場費、景品代を払うことなどを決めました。

 

 

↑After a long time away, I visited the luxurious restaurant Lunarossa with the soroban girls, Hirono and Kimika.

  そろばんガールズのHironoさんKimikaさんと、久しぶりに豪華なレストランLunarossaへ行きました。

 

 

↑Everything was good. After we ate a lot of dishes, we ordered desserts.

  全部良かったです。たくさんの料理を食べた後、デザートを注文しました。

 

↑Soroban girls are really good at eating.

  そろばんガールズは食べことが本当に得意です。

６月２７日　日本のおもちゃ・準備

 

↑Around 7:30, Palu, who was my TIOE student and is working for Niuafo’ou Island, came to my house. He wanted a picture I took last week at Talamafu Market.

 I provided him with a buckwheat noodle (soba). It was his first time to eat it and use chop sticks.

 ７時半頃、ニウアフォオウで働いている元教員養成学校の生徒さんのPaluさんが家に来ました。彼は先週マーケットで撮った写真が欲しかったようでした。

　彼に蕎麦をご馳走しました。蕎麦を食べるのと箸を使うのは初めてだったようです。

 

 

↑Since he is teaching to the Niuafo’ou students, I decided to give him a lot of Japanese toys. Please bring them to the rural island.

  彼はニウアフォウの生徒達に教えているので、日本のおもちゃを持って行ってもらうことにしました。

 

 

↑He practiced a top and cup and ball. Though it was the first time for him to play them, he did it very well. 

  独楽と剣玉を練習しました。初めてでしたが、とても上手にやっていました。

 

 

↑At lunch, we went to the Café Reef. I ordered “ota ika” (Tongan raw fish mixed with coconut milk).

  昼にリーフカフェへ行ってOta ika（トンガ風刺身、ココナッツミルク和え）を注文しました。

 

 

↑We prepared a lot of things for the abacus competitions, especially we wrapped the gifts for the commended students. It was good for our diet.

  大会の為にたくさん準備しました。特に表彰される子ども達への商品ラッピングを行いました。それは良い運動で、ダイエットできるかも知れません。

 

 

↑At night, I was invited to a party by Matazo and his spouse. All of us belong to the tennis club. It was a nice party. Malo ‘aupito. 

  夜、Yamagataさんと奥さんに招待されました。全員テニス部に所属しております。素晴らしい夕食会でした。ありがとうございました。

６月２６日　パンク・会議・トンガ料理

 

↑I called on Melissa and fixed her bicycle. She had her bicycle stolen before and then the thief brought it back to her because the thief was one of her school’s students. Although the person who did a bad action should have to fix her bicycle completely, this is Tonga as well.

 Melissa先生を訪ね、自転車を修理しました。彼女は先日自転車を盗まれましたが、盗人が返してきました。なぜなら、盗人は学校の生徒だったからです。やった本人が完全に修理するべきところですが、これもトンガ流です。 

 

 

↑I met Farfum, who is a Vava’u volunteer. Long time no see! He is going back to America for two weeks. Have a nice trip.

  ババウボランティアのFarfumさんに会いました。久しぶり～！彼は２週間アメリカへ帰ります。良い旅を！

 

 

↑At 1 o’clock, we had a meeting for the Heilala Festival, which is one of the famous events in Tonga.

  １時にトンガで有名なお祭り「ヘイララフェスティバル」について話し合いました。

 

 

↑Following that, I received Tongan food from the security guard Tevita. I shared it with my volunteer friends. Malo Tevita.

  その後、Tevitaさんからトンガ料理をもらいました。隊員仲間と分けて食べました。ありがとうTevitaさん。

25th Jun. Market, Meeting, Welcome Party

「Market, Meeting, Welcome Party」

６月２５日　マーケット・会議・歓迎会

 

↑Around 8:30 I visited a flea market beside my house. Hirono and Kimika were there.

 ８時半頃に家の近所のフリーマーケットへ行きました。HironoさんとKimikaさんがいました。

 

 

↑After an hour, I bought this shirt for 35 pa’anga(1750 yen). It was very expensive but I’m pleased.

  １時間後にこのシャツを３５パアンガ（１７５０円）で買いました。とても高かったのですが、気に入りました。

 

 

↑At 10 o’clock, we had an abacus and mathematics meeting with the new volunteer Manami. Since she has just arrived in Tonga, it might be too much explanation for her. Anyway, take it easy!

  １０時に新隊員のManamiさんを交えてそろばん算数部会を開きました。トンガに到着したばかりなので、説明が多すぎたかも知れません・・・。まぁ気楽にいきましょう。

 

 

↑At night, we held a welcome party for the new volunteers, Manami and Yuuki. Both of them are from Okayama prefecture, which is famous for the Momotarou story. My special curry & rice is very popular among the JICA volunteers and American Peace Corps volunteers.

  夜、JICAドミトリーでManamiさんとYuukiさんの歓迎会を開きました。２人とも桃太郎で有名な岡山県から来ました。Torojiro先生の特製カレーはJICAとアメリカンピースコープの中で非常に人気が高いです。

トンガで数少ない

日本人オーナーの店へ来た。

離島からボランティア達が集ってきた特別な日。

だからカツ丼を注文した。

半熟の卵とからめてあるトンカツが

たまらなく美味しい。

よく来る場所だけど

たまに来る人達と

たまに注文するメニューのお陰で

新しく感じることができる。
