７月２７日　準備だぞ

 

↑In the morning, I went for a normal walk to the wharf.

  朝、波止場まで普通の散歩に出かけました。

↑This is a public vehicle of Ha’apai school’s office, just a big truck.

  ハアパイスクールズオフィスの公用車、でかいトラックです。

 

 

↑We visited the abacus competition’s hall and did a rehearsal. Sefo and Ifa, who is the school’s officer in Ha’apai, seemed to be ready to read the oral questions.

 そろばん大会の会場を訪れ、リハーサルを行いました。SefoさんとハアパイスクールズオフィサーのIfaさんは読上算の準備が出来ているようでした。

 

 

↑After the rehearsal, we visited the unique beer shop,

  リハーサルの後、唯一のビール店へ行き・・・

 

 

↑the luxurious market (that’s all Ha’apai residents can buy),

  豪華なマーケットに行きました。これがハアパイ住民の買える全てです。

 

 

↑and Talahiva restaurant. The shop keeper seems to decide customers order because when we order, they had only chicken or mix (chicken, sheep and pork) barbeque. Yet while we were eating, I saw the other customers order from another menu. That’s funny.

  そしてTalahivaレストランへ行きました。この店では店員が注文を決めているようです。我々が注文した時は、チキンとMIX（チキン・羊・豚）のバーベキューしかなかったのに、食べている間、他のお客さんが別のメニューを頼んでいました。面白いです。

 

 

↑We saw Kimika’s dog Onigiri. Onigiri means rice ball so Sefo calls him rice ball and I call him Nigirimeshi.

  Kimikaさんの犬、おにぎり君に会いました。おにぎりは「ライスボール」というのでSefoさんはそのように呼んでいます。Torojiro先生は「にぎり飯」と呼んでいます。

 

 

↑He has very short legs, a big head and is very cute.

  彼はとても短い足と、デッカイ顔をしていて可愛らしいです。

 

 

↑Around 3:30, we prepared the Ha’apai High School’s hall for the competition. We brought a lot of desks and chairs from GPS Pangai. Finally it became a beautiful hall.

  ３時半頃、ハアパイ高校の会場準備をしました。たくさんの机と椅子をPangai小学校から運びました。最後に素晴らしい会場になりました。

 

↑Since Todd, who is my close Peace Corp Volunteer, is living in Ha’apai High School’s accommodation, we called on him and talked a lot.

 This day last year, we were in New Zealand. Time really flies when you are having fun.

  ピースコープボランティアで仲良しのToddさんがハアパイ高校の宿に住んでいるので遊びに行き、たくさん話ました。

　去年の今日は一緒にニュージーランドにいました。時間が経つのははやい！！

 

 

↑At night, abacus members had dinner at Mariners Café, which is located below our accommodation Fifita Guest House. I ordered ota-ika (Tongan raw fish) and it was delicious.

  夜、Fifita Guest Houseの下にあるMariner’s　Caféde食事をしました。Otaikaを注文しました。おいしかったです。

７月２６日　スタッフミーティングだぞ

 

↑At 9:30 Sefo arrived at Ha’apai. Because of Tongatapu shool’s officer’s poor booking, he missed his airplane and he was forced to pay it himself. I cannot explain anymore because it’s too silly. Tongatapu school’s office is destroying Tongan education. If the office disappears, everything will be good. Anyway, all the abacus officers, soroban girls (Hirono, Kimika and Manami), Hiko, Sefo and Torojiro, have come together.

  ９時半にSefoさんがハアパイに着きました。トンガタプのスクールズオフィサーの情けない予約のせいで、Sefoさんは飛行機を逃しました。そして自腹でやってきたのです。馬鹿げすぎていて物が言えません。トンガタプのスクールズオフィスはトンガ教育を壊しています。もしこれが無くなれば全てがうまくいくでしょう。とにかく全てのそろばんオフィサー（そろばんガールズのHironoさん、Kimikaさん、Manamiさん、そしてHikoさん、Sefoさん、Torojiro先生）が集まりました。

 

↑Around 2 o’clock, we had a staff meeting at GPS Pangai. All of the teachers (class3, 4 and 5) came to the meeting. The teachers sitting in the right side and the second teacher from the right (Hiva and Manu) were my students in TIOE last year. I thought, I have been working in Tonga for a long time.

 Sefo was the main organizer, and we helped him. Compared with last year, the meeting was very smooth, maybe because there are 6 abacus officers temporarily in Ha’apai, Ha’apai teachers and school’s officers are great and we had a competition last year.

  ２時頃、Pangai小学校でスタッフミーティングを開きました。３，４，５年生の先生が皆集まりました。左の先生と左から２番目の先生（Hiva先生とManu先生）は去年の教員養成学校の生徒さんです。長くトンガで働いているんだなぁと思いました。

　Sefoさんが中心となってミーティングを開き、我々はサポート役でした。去年と比べて、ミーティングはとてもスムーズでした。多分、６人のそろばんオフィサーが一時的にハアパイにいるのと、ハアパイの先生とスクールズオフィサーは素晴らしいのと、去年大会を開いているからでしょう。

 

↑At 7 o’clock we called on Sachiko, whose job has to do with natural disasters and has a powerful character, and Miyuki, who is a kindergarten teacher and has a kindergarten edition YAMANEKO. On the way, by chance we found that some rooms are still used at GPS Pangai. It was Tupou, she was teaching night abacus class…Oh amazing!!! Please don’t ruin your health Tupou, but she is teaching willingly. She is a really charismatic teacher. One of her students Penisoni is going to Japan next month.

  ７時に防災に関する仕事をしていてパワフルな性格を持つSacchanと、幼稚園の先生で幼稚園バージョン山ネコを所有しているMiyuki姉を訪ねました。道中でたまたまPangai小学校のいくつか教室がまだ使われているのを見つけました。Tupou先生がそろばんナイトクラスを教えているのでした。ひょえ～！！！体を壊さないようにしてください・・・でも彼女は喜んで教えているのです。まさしくカリスマ教師です。生徒の１人Penisoni君が来月日本へ行きます。

↑Miyuki and Sachiko provided us with curry & rice and curry & noodle. It was delicious. Sachiko lives in the guest house, so its living room is very big and comfortable.

  Miyuki姉とSacchanがカレーライスとカレーヌードルを作ってくれました。とてもおいしかったです。Sacchanはゲストハウスに住んでいるので、リビングがとても大きくて快適です。

25th Jul. Ha’apai

７月２５日　ハアパイだぞ

 

↑At 5:30 I left my house and went to Ha’apai by this airplane DC-3. Anyway I was sleepy.

  ５時半に家を出て、DC-３飛行機でハアパイへ行きました。とにかく眠かったです。

 

 

↑We prepared for the staff meeting (made the documents) with Kimika, though we have almost completed it, thanks to Kimika’s work and our experience.

  スタッフミーティングの準備をしました。Kimikaさんと書類作りです。ハアパイボランティアKimikaさんのがんばりと、我々の経験のお陰で、ほぼ終わっているのですが・・・。

 

 

↑After lunch, we took a look at the abacus competition’s hall a little bit. This is Ha’apai High School’s hall.

  昼食の後、そろばん大会会場の下見を少ししました。これはハアパイ高校のホールです。

 

 

↑Around 4 o’clock, we visited GPS Pangai where we will have a staff meeting tomorrow. Tupou was teaching an extra abacus class. She is really eagerly teaching abacus after she participated in the Japan abacus camp last year.

  ４時頃、明日スタッフミーティングが開かれるPangai小学校を訪れました。Tupou先生は特別クラスを教えていました。彼女は去年日本キャンプに参加してから、非常に熱心にそろばんを教えてくれています。

 

 

↑When we came back to the school’s office, I saw Ifa, who is a school’s officer, reading out oral questions to his kids. He is supposed to read the questions at the competition and his kids failed in the selection to take Tupou’s extra class, but they are still trying to improve their level every day. Ha’apai abacus situation is great, that’s why Ha’apai won the national competition. A tiny Tongatapu should learn from this great island

  スクールズオフィスに戻った時、オフィサーのIfaさんが子ども達に読上算をやっているのを見ました。彼は大会で読むことになっています。彼の子ども達はTupou先生特別クラスを受ける選考にもれてしまいました。しかし毎日練習しようとしています。ハアパイのそろばん教育の状況は凄いです。だからハアパイは全国大会で勝利を収めたのでしょう。トンガタプもこの凄い島を見習うべきですねぇ。

 

 

↑Kimika invited us to her house. She is very good at cooking though she doesn’t match a bicycle. Thank you for providing us with a meal.

  Kimikaさんが夕食に招いてくれました。Kimikaさんは自転車は似合いませんが料理はとても上手です。ありがとうございます。

24th Jul. Husband & Wife YAMANEKOs

「Husband & Wife YAMANEKOs」

７月２４日　夫婦山ネコだぞ

 

↑It was not snowing but raining almost all day long so mostly I was in my house. I wanted to go for an aggressive walk to the Blow Holes but I couldn’t. Instead I was training my muscles for my skiing in New Zealand next month and after 5 months (next winter season) in Nagano prefecture. My condition is getting better especially my abdominal muscles; muscles around the shoulder and the lower limbs’ muscles are more defined. Perhaps now I can put up with my speed (more than 50 km/h) and an impact from bumps at the snow field. I wonder if my ski school members in Asahi village are doing well.

By the way, hey Torojiro! Are you sure? You have to go back to your work before you go skiing in Japan.

  ほぼ一日中雪ではなく雨が降っていました。だからほとんど家にいました。ブロウホールズに攻撃的散歩に行きたかったのですが、無理でした。その代わり筋トレで来月のニュージーランドと５ヶ月後の長野県（きたるべきスキーシーズン）の為に体を鍛えておりました。調整は順調に進んでおります。特に腹筋と肩周りの筋肉と下肢の筋肉が割れてきました。おそらくこれで５０ｋｍ以上のスピードとコブ斜面からの衝撃にも耐えられると思います。スキー学校のメンバー達は元気にやっているでしょうか・・・。

　ところで・・・Torojiro先生、あなた日本でスキーに行く前に元の仕事に戻らなきゃならないんですけど大丈夫っすか？？？

 

 

↑In the evening, Hiko, who is my colleague in CDU, and his spouse Noriko came to my house. Tomorrow Hiko and I are going to Ha’apai for an abacus competition. He can pick me up but he doesn’t know where my house is exactly, so he came and checked the way. Thank you for coming and I gave them No.294 and No.295 YAMANEKO & YAMANEKO-KO, so to speak a married couple YAMANEKOs. Now the YAMANEKO serial number is very close to 300.

  夕方、CDUでお世話になっているHikoさんと奥さんのNorikoさんが来てくれました。明日Hikoさんと大会開催の為ハアパイへ行きます。お迎えに来てくれるのですが、家がどこかハッキリわからなかったので、確認に来てくれました。お越しいただきありがとうございます。山ネコNo.２９４と山ネコ子No.２９５を渡しました。いわば夫婦の山ネコです。山ネコのシリアルナンバーが３００近くになってきました。

 

I may not be able to update my blog in Ha'apai. I will stick out. See you soon!

Here is YAMANEKO in Iowa. YAMANEKO is traveling together with Farfum, who is a Peace Corps volunteer in Vava’u. Yet…I think, this is Melissa’s YAMANEKO (abacus edition), Farfum seems to have forgotten his YAMANEKO in Vava’u. Anyway, have a good trip and see you again in Tonga.

山ネコはアメリカのIowaにいます。ババウのアメリカンピースコープボランティアのFarfumさんと旅行しています。しかし・・・この山ネコはMelissa先生のそろばんバージョン山ネコではないか～。どうやらFarfumさんは彼の山ネコをババウに忘れたようでした。まぁとにかく良い旅を！そしてトンガでまた会いましょう！

↑Around 1 o’clock, we came together at the JICA dormitory and put our Heilala equipment in order. We have another Heilala event, a parade, on 1 August.

  １時頃、JICAドミトリーへ集まり、ヘイララフェスティバルの片付けをしました。８月１日にもう１つのイベント（パレード）があります。

 

 

↑In the evening, we went to the Korean restaurant to celebrate Yuka’s birthday. It was cold today so especially a dish in a hot pot tastes very good. 

  夕方、Taneちゃんの誕生日会で韓国料理店へ行きました。寒かったので、特に鍋料理がおいしかったです。

 

 

↑Yuka is going to turn ※※soon and it will become the oldest age among the JICA volunteers in Tonga. Have a nice new age!

  Taneちゃんはもうすぐ※※歳になり、それはトンガボランティアの最年長となります。よい新しい歳を！
