１１月２６日　エウア大会だぞ

 

↑It was a public performance today. Tuamelie, who is working for GPS Ta’anga, was in charge of MC (Master of Ceremonies).

今日は本番でした。Ta’anga小学校のTuamelie先生がMCを勤めてくれました。

 

↑This is Oketi, who is the principal of ‘Eua High School and was the guest of honor.

エウア高校校長のOketi先生です。本日の特別ゲストです。

 

↑About 200 students came together from 6 GPS in ‘Eua.

約２００人の生徒達がエウアの政府系小学校６校から集まりました。

 

↑There are not so many teachers in ‘Eua, but thanks to the teachers, who eagerly helped us, the competition went very smoothly.

エウアにはそんなにたくさんの先生はいませんが、運営を助けてくれた先生達のお陰で、エウア大会はスムーズにいきました。

 

↑’Eua teachers’ level is high. It’s not flattery.

エウアの先生のレベルは高いのです。お世辞ではありません。

 

↑We took the same contents (written problem, oral problem and flash problem) as the Vava’u and Ha’apai competitions. The commendation ceremony has become enthusiastic every time.

ババウ、ハアパイと同じ内容（総合・読み上げ・フラッシュ）をやりました。毎回表彰式は盛り上がります。

 

↑In each subject the first prize student up to the 23^rd prize student got the gifts. Especially the first to the third students could get the medals.

それぞれの種目で１位から２３位に入った子ども達が景品をもらえました。特に１位から３位はメダルがもらえました。

9th Nov. Has Torojiro started learning French?

１１月９日　フランス語を始めましたか！？

 

↑At TIOE, I showed my abacus examination questions for the year 2 and 3 to the deputy principal Sela. It amounted to 22 papers. Fortunately, almost all of the English descriptions for the questions were correct or made sense, so I will make some minor adjustments in it tonight, and then I will be able to photocopy it for 80 students tomorrow.

　教員養成学校で、副校長のSela先生に２年生と３年生用のそろばん試験用紙を見てもらいました。合計２２枚になりましたが運良く、質問に関する英語の記述はだいたい正しかったり意味が通じたりしていたので、今晩少し手直しして、明日生徒８０人分のコピーが出来そうです。事務仕事とは何となく終わっていくものです。トイレに行くようなものなのです。（Torojiro先生真面目に仕事してる？？　　　は・・・はい、人と直接関わる所では魂がこもっている・・・はず。）

 

↑I sent a birthday postcard to Michiko in Africa a month ago, and I had already sent an envelope with a letter and small gifts 5 months ago, but they have not gotten there yet. As is often the case with developing countries, they cannot deliver the mail correctly. If I write Happy Birthday in Japanese by an e-mail, sending a letter will be worthless, so…..I decided to send an e-mail in French.

 １ヶ月前アフリカのMicchanにバースデーカードを送りました。５ヶ月前手紙と小さいギフトが入った封筒も送っているのですが、まだ届いておりません。発展途上国にはよくあることですが、郵便物がちゃんと届きません。でも今さらメールでおめでとうと言ってしまうと、手紙を送った意味がないし・・・あ～ちくしょ～～アフリカめ～

頭にきたのでフランス語でメールすることにしました。（←どんな怒りのもっていき方じゃ！？）

↑Today, I made one YAMANEKO doll as well. I usually put the YAMANEKO doll beside the window after I make it. There is a pleasant wind recently so YAMANEKO dries up well.

 今日もまた１つ山ネコを作りました。普段は作った後、窓際に置いておきます。最近心地よい風が吹いているので山ネコがよく乾きます。

１０月２９日　ハアパイそろばん大会だぞ

 

↑At 9 o’clock, the Ha’apai abacus competition started at GPS Pangai. Class 3, 4 and 5 students can participate in the competition, and about 250 participants came together from 5 government primary schools in the Ha’apai main islands.

９時にハアパイのそろばん大会が始まりました。３，４，５年生が参加できます。ハアパイのメインアイランドにある５つの政府系小学校から約２５０人が集まりました。

↑This is Saane, who is a class 5 student in GPS Pangai, she went to Japan to participate in the Japanese abacus camp last year with her mother, Aloisia. She puts numbers on her abacus by her left hand, which is rare in Japan. Anyway, she is very good at abacus.

パンガイ小学校５年生のSaaneさんです。去年お母さんと一緒に日本のそろばんキャンプに参加しました。母はAloisia先生です。彼女は左手で数字をそろばんにおきます。これは日本ではとても珍しいことです。とにかく彼女はそろばんがとても上手です。

↑When we came to the “Oral problem” I took charge of judgment. When students made a mistake I had to decide their rank immediately. A lot of teachers helped me, thank you very much.

読み上げ算の時、審判を務めました。間違えた生徒にすぐに順位をつけなければなりませんでした。たくさんの先生達が手伝ってくれました。ありがとうございます。

 

↑In Ha’apai, teachers have to participate in the competition same as Vava’u. All teachers did well.

  ハアパイでは先生達も大会に参加しなければなりません。ババウと同じですが一生懸命やってくれました。

 

↑Before the closing ceremony, suddenly the school’s officer, Vai, asked me to show them my abacus technique.

閉会式の前に、突然オフィサーのVaiさんがそろばんの技術を子ども達に見せてくれと言われました。

 

↑I showed “Flash problem” skill the students did this time. I tried 3-digit calculation. Five 3-digit numbers appear and disappear in order on the screen, and I calculated the amount then I succeeded every time. Maybe all of the students were pleased, because they did 1-digit calculation today.

今回生徒達もやったフラッシュ問題を見せました。３桁の計算をしました。３桁の数字が５つ、順番にスクリーンに現れたり消えたりします。それの合計を求めますが、毎回成功しました。今日彼らが取組んだのは１桁なので、たぶん皆喜んでくれたのではないかと思います。

↑During the prize giving, 23 participants were given prizes in each class, (class 3, 4 and 5), and in each subject (Written problem, Oral problem, Flash problem). The number of the gifts amounted to more than 200, we prepared a lot, especially wrapping, so it was hard work for us. This way, many students could get the gifts, so I think it’s good. Saane, who is in the right side in the picture, got 3 gold medals.

表彰式の時、２３人が賞をもらえました。それぞれの学年（３、４、５年生）の、それぞれの種目（筆記問題、読み上げ算競技、フラッシュ競技）でもらえるので、合計２００以上になります。たくさん準備して大変でしたが、たくさんの生徒達が賞をもらえたので、それは良いことだと思います。Saaneさんは３つの金メダルを取りました。

１０月２２日　ババウのそろばん大会だぞ～　

↑Nearly 300 students came together at Fakamelino hall in Neiafu city. It seemed to be the first time　such a big competition was held..

３００人近くがＦａｋａｍｅｌｉｎｏホールに集まりました。こんな大きな規模の大会は初めてのようでした。

↑Before the competition, I received a lot of requests and questions from Vava’u teachers. It means Vava’u teachers and students are very interested in the competition so I am very happy.

 There were 3 subjects, Written problem(Multiplication, Division, and Addition&Subtraction ) , Oral problem (Read out the number), and Flash (Watch the number on the PC projector screen, and add it.).

大会の前に、ババウの先生達からたくさんの質問を受けました。それはババウの先生や生徒が大会に興味を持ってくれているから。とても幸せです。

３つの種目がありました。総合問題（かけ算、わり算、見取り算＋－）、読み上げ算、　フラッシュ（プロジェクターのスクリーンに数字が出て、それを足す）。

↑During the closing ceremony, Pungatoa, who is the school’s officer, took charge of prize giving. He was on a leave but he was still working a lot for the competition, thank you so much.

閉会式の時、スクールズオフィサーのＰｕｎｇａｔｏａさんが授与してくれました。彼は休暇中なのですが、大会のためにたくさん働いてくれました。本当にありがとうございます。

↑Vava’u teachers, especially GPS Neiafu, helped me a lot. Next time, they can run the competition without a volunteer I think.

ババウの先生たち（特にネイアフ小学校の先生達）はたくさん働いて助けてくれました。次回はボランティア無しで大会が開けると思います。

↑It took 6 hours to run the competition. It was very long, but staff were making an effort until the end. I really appreciate their attitude. Thanks to their help, Vava’u kids were excited.

 Hopefully they continue to practice after the competition. Anyway, we had a very good time in Vava’u. 

大会は６時間かかりました。とても長かったですが、スタッフは最後までがんばってくれました。その取り組みはすばらしいと思います。彼らのお陰でババウの子どもたちは楽しむ事ができました。

　できれば大会の後も練習を続けてくれたらと思います。とにかくババウで楽しい時間が過ごせました。

１０月８日　たくさんの人に会ったぞ

 

↑Before CDU, I met Kouichi’s friend, Kasumi, who is working in Fiji as a JICA volunteer. She came to Tonga last week, and had been in Ha’apai until yesterday.

 I gave No.255 YAMANEKO doll to her. Congratulations you’re one of the YAMANEKO holders.

職場に行く前にKouちゃんの友達でフィジーでボランティアをしているKATSUOちゃんに会いました。先週トンガに来て、昨日までハアパイに滞在していました。

　山ネコNo.２５５を渡しました。おめでとう。これであなたも山ネコ保持者の１人ですよ。

 

↑At CDU, I gave No.256 YAMANEKO doll to Emi, who is an aerobics volunteer in Vava’u. She went on a trip to Sydney and brought back a garlic press for me. Thank you! I forgot to pay money for her. I am sorry I will pay it tomorrow.

 CDUで山ネコNo．２５６をババウでエアロビ隊員をやっているMorimoriに渡しました。シドニーへ任国外旅行に行っていて、ニンニク潰し器を買ってきてくれました。ありがと～う。しかし、お金を払うのを忘れていました。すんません。明日払いますので。。。

このニンニク潰し器は鋼鉄で出来ております。もちろん、頑丈！

 

↑This is a previous garlic press, which is made of plastic. Once it was broken and I fixed it. It passed the baton to the steel one. Thank you for your hard work.

 これは以前のニンニク潰し器。プラスティックで出来ております。一旦潰れて、修理しました。鋼鉄のニンニク潰し器にバトンを渡しました。　よく働いてくれました。

ところで、CDUオフィサーのMotiさんも山ネコNo．１７５を持っています。

 

↑I counted how many gifts we have in CDU. We are supposed to give them out at the abacus competition. There are 500 erasers and more than 1300 pencils.

CDUでどれだけ景品があるか数えました。そろばん大会で配ることになっています。５００以上の消しゴムと１３００以上の鉛筆があります。

 

↑At 2 o’clock, I taught abacus to Noah and Cecile. Noah is Israeli and Cecile is French. Perhaps it’s my first time to speak with an Israeli and a Frenchwoman; of course it’s very rare to meet people from these countries, so I am happy to make friends with them. They will come to my abacus lesson every week from now on. I am very excited.

 ２時にそろばんをNoahさんとCecileさんに教えました。Noahさんはイスラエル人でCecileさんはフランス人です。イスラエルとフランスの人と話すのは多分初めてで、もちろんトンガでそれらの国の人達と会うのはとても珍しいことなので、彼らと友達になれてとても幸せです。彼らは今日から毎週そろばんレッスンに来ることになります。

 

↑After work, I visited the JICA dormitory to meet Shouko. She cut my hair, and her skill is pretty good. Malo aupito.

↑At night, I fixed a flat tire. The fast bicycle ran over a small wire. There are lots of small wires on the Tongan roads.

　夜、パンクを修理しました。小さい針金を踏んだようです。トンガの道には細かい針金がいっぱい落ちています。
