１２月９日　新しいピースコープボランティア

 

↑At last I have received my package. The post office worker, whom I talked to yesterday, called me an hour after like we promised. Actually he called me so I should appreciate his work as a Tongan.

 Someone fixed the outside of my package, thank you, and then, we confirmed the contents inside. Fortunately everything was safe, nothing was stolen. I felt relieved. Instead, my family made a serious mistake. The size of my bicycle tube was wrong. Hopefully my sister, Akiko, will bring it.

 ついに荷物を受け取りました。昨日話した郵便局員が電話をかけてくれました。約束していた時間の1時間後でしたが、実際彼は電話をかけてきたので、トンガ人の仕事としては評価してあげるべきだと思います。

　誰かが荷物の外回りを修理してくれていました。ありがとう。そして中身を確認しました。幸い全てのものは無事で、何も盗られていませんでした。安心しました。代わりに家族が重大なミスをしていました。自転車のチューブのサイズが違っていました。妹のAkikoさんが持ってきてくれるでしょう。

 

↑After Melissa’s lesson, we had dinner at an Indian curry & rice shop. From the left this is Jinnet and Ofa, who are the new Peace Corps volunteers. They had finished 2 months training in Ha’apai last Friday. Nice to meet you. Their new houses are not available yet, so they need to stay in St. Andrew’s accommodation, Melissa’s workplace, for a few days. I am familiar with Peace Corps information thanks to Melissa and Lavinia, who is my landlord and is working for the Peace Corps Office.

Melissa先生の授業の後、インドのカレー店で夕食を食べました。左からJinnetさん、Ofaさん。彼女達は新しいピースコープボランティアです。先週の金曜日にハアパイで２ヶ月のトレーニングを終えたばかりです。新しい家がまだ都合がつかないので、Melissa先生の学校の宿舎に数日間泊まります。Torojiro先生はMelissa先生と、大家でピースコープ事務所で働くLaviniaさんのお陰で、ピースコープ情報にやたらと詳しいです。

１２月８日　もう期待していませんけどね・・・

 

↑After work, a few minutes after 4 o’clock, I visited the post office and asked one officer to give me the package, which was broken yesterday. I confirmed the contents with my family in Japan. The officer in the photo looked for my package and said “We cannot find your package. Only the lady, whom you talked to yesterday, knows where your package is”.

 I realized that he knows where my package is, but he just doesn’t want to work hard because the post office is supposed to close at 4 o’clock. No one can lose the package in such a small room.

 Anyway, they should share the customers’ information. He asked my phone number to let me know whether they find it or not tomorrow, but I could not rely on him.

“When will you call me?” I asked.

“Well ….at 9 AM” He replied.

Thank you, I will wait for your call without expectation. Tongan public service is completely poor.

 仕事の後、４時ちょっと過ぎに郵便局に行きました。昨日箱が壊れていた荷物を中身が確認できたので受け取りたいと言ったら、写真の人が、「荷物を見つけられない」と・・・。「昨日応対した女性じゃないと何処にあるか分からない」と言っておりました。

　分かりました。何処にあるか知ってるけど、残業したくないのね・・・郵便局は４時に閉まることになっているので・・・。こんな小さい部屋で荷物が無くなる訳がないでしょ。

　とにかく、彼らはお客の情報を共有しておいた方がいいでしょう。彼は明日女性に確認して電話をかけるから電話番号を教えてくれといいましたが、信用できません。

「何時にかけてくれるの？」と聞くと

「え・・・っと９時・・・」と答えてくれました。

ありがとう。期待しないで待ってるよ。トンガの公共施設のサービスはなかなかのものです。

５時に４人のボランティアが帰国報告会をしました。お疲れ様でした。　自分たちの隊次の発表はこれの後３回目です。お～～。

7th Dec. Old boys went to karaoke.

１２月７日　おっさんカラオケへ行く！

 

↑At TIOE I gave a supplement exam for the year 3 students and for the year 2 students. Hopefully all of them pass the exam. If some of them fail it I cannot give them anymore.

　教員養成学校で、３年生と２年生に追試をしました。全員が受かることを期待します。もし誰かが落ちてもこれ以上追試が出来ません。

 

↑Around 3 o’clock, I called on the post office. I was supposed to receive two packages, which my family sent from Japan. Unfortunately, the packages were broken. Oh man! Maybe someone stole something inside. So I left them at the post office and decided to ask my family about the contents. Tomorrow I will confirm the contents at the post office. It’s common in developing countries.

３時頃、郵便局に行きました。日本の家族が送ってくれた２つの小包を受け取る予定でした。不幸な事に、小包は壊れていました。多分誰かが中身の何かを盗ったのでしょう。だからそれらを郵便局に置いてきて、家族に内容を聞くことにしました。明日、郵便局で内容を確認します。これは途上国では一般的なことです。

 

↑Fortunately, the most important thing, garlic chips, arrived in Tonga safely. I was relieved.

 幸い、一番大切なにんにくチップは無事トンガに届きました。安心しました。

Later that day, I had dinner at a Chinese restaurant with 10 volunteers. After that…

　夜、中華料理店で１０名のボランティアと食事をしました。そして・・・

 

↑Three boys went to the Korean restaurant to enjoy karaoke. Of course it was stuffy karaoke, but we made an effort to sing songs as much as possible. We sang songs for 2 hours without a rest. Our voices will be hoarse tomorrow.

 ３名のおっさんが韓国料理店へカラオケを楽しみに行きました。もちろん暑苦しいカラオケながら、可能な限りたくさん歌うように頑張りました。２時間休憩無しで歌いました。明日声がかれるでしょう。

１２月６日　久しぶりにブロウホールに行ったぞ

 

↑Around noon, I ate a Mabo-tofu, which was left over from Kuniko’s house last night. It was still delicious.

　お昼頃、昨日Kunikoさんの家から持ち帰った麻婆豆腐を食べました。時間は経ちましたが美味しかったです。

At the JICA dormitory, I used the Internet, because the Internet is down at CDU. The PC engineer, Super Toni, is on a leave and he is traveling around Australia with his brother for 6 months, so no one can fix the trouble. Oh my god…

　JICAドミトリーでインターネットをしました。CDUのインターネットが壊れております。パソコン担当のスーパーToniさんは半年の休暇中で兄とオーストラリアを廻っております。だから誰も直せないかもしれません・・・困ったもんだ。

 

↑At 6 o’clock PM, I went for an aggressive walk. It had been 2 weeks since last time I went to the Blow Holes. On purpose, I went by a roundabout way, so it took me a little more than an hour to walk 30 km distance. I walked a lot.

夕方６時に攻撃的散歩に出かけました。２週間ぶりのブロウホールです。わざと遠回りで来たので、距離は３０ｋｍで約１時間ちょっとかかりました。たくさん歩きました。

5th Dec. I learned how to make a Mabo-tofu.

１２月５日　麻婆豆腐を覚えたぞ～　

 

↑I like a Mabo-tofu, bean cured sautéed with ground meat and chili pepper in a thick sauce. I used to make it with a mix of Mabo-tofu. I open a package and add it into a pan with bean curd.

It was my first time to make it with seasonings and materials, from scratch. These are the seasonings.

麻婆豆腐が好きです。麻婆豆腐の素（封を開けて、豆腐と一緒に鍋に入れるだけ）からはよく作っていたのですが、食材と調味料から作るのは初めてでした。

 

↑I am drunken now, so I cannot explain well… anyway, thanks to Kuniko, who is a Japanese language teacher, I understood how to make it.

 I will make my special Mabo-tofu, of course with a lot of garlic, next Saturday at the farewell party.

今酔っ払っているので、よく説明できませんが、とにかく日本語教師のKunikoさんのお陰でどうやって麻婆豆腐を作るか理解することができました。

次の土曜日、送別会でニンニクたっぷりTorojiro特製麻婆豆腐を作ろうと思います。

 

↑We had a great dinner party at Kuniko’s house. There was lots of food: dumplings, salad, fish, fried chicken and Mabo-tofu.

Kunikoさんの家で素晴らしい夕食会が開かれました。たくさんの食べ物がありました。餃子、サラダ、魚、鳥のから揚げ、麻婆豆腐です。

4th Dec. Bicycle & Tennis

１２月４日　チャリとテニスだぞ

 

↑At seven thirty, I participated in a bicycle event. The starting point was the post office.  A Dutch internet company was the sponsor, but I was not really sure of the purpose. Anyway, It was free to participate in the event so I wanted to ride my bicycle.

７時半にスタート地点の郵便局へ行き、自転車イベントに参加しました。オランダのインターネット会社が主催でしたが、趣旨はよく分かりませんでした。無料だったので、自転車に乗りたかっただけでした。

１時間で２５ｋｍ自転車に乗りました。よい運動です。

 

↑After that, Aya and I went to the Emerald restaurant. I especially like this dumpling. We ate the dumpling, fried noodles, egg soup and steamed rice. Everything was delicious.

その後、Ayaちゃんとエメラルドレストランへ行きました。特にこの餃子が好きです。餃子、フライドヌードル、タマゴスープ、ご飯を食べました。全部美味しかったです。

↑Around 3 o’clock, I played tennis. 3 months has passed since the last time I did it. I have to train my muscles more. I am a beginner but thanks to everyone’s help, I could enjoy the game.

３時頃、テニスをしました。３ヶ月ぶりです。早いものです。もっと筋肉を鍛えなければなりません。Torojiro先生は初心者ですが、皆様のお陰で楽しくゲームが出来ました。

3rd Dec. The semi final exam this year.

１２月３日　今年最後から２番目の試験

 

↑At TIOE, I gave a supplement exam for the year 3 students. Last time, 3 out of 10 students passed it. This time, 3 out of 7 has passed. Next Tuesday, I will give them exactly the final supplement exam. I won’t make them fail next time, because they were eagerly practicing and they are using their abacus correctly. I just want to tell them that making an effort is very important.

 The students who took the supplement exam had a good attitude and good attendance, but by chance they could not get a good mark, so I decided to help them.

On the other hand, some of the others had a bad attitude, poor attendance and completely no studying. As a result they got bad marks. In this case I never help them. Though Tongan teachers help them…In my class, fortunately (?) they can study one more year instead of graduating. You may make an effort next year!

I seemed to be very strict, but I can say I became very lazy after I came to Tonga. I was stricter when I gave a weekly small test to my Japanese primary school students than when I gave a very important final term end examination to TIOE students. How strange the situation is!

TIOE is the only teacher training school in Tonga. Teachers should be strict, so I cannot be lazy any more.

教員養成学校で、３年生に追試を行いました。前回１０人中３人が合格しました。今回は７人中３人。今度の火曜日に最後の追試を行います。次回は誰も落とさないと思います。何故なら、彼らは熱心に練習していて、そろばんも正確に使っているからです。ただ努力する大切さを伝えたいと思っているのです。

追試を受けた生徒は態度もよく、出席もよく、たまたま最終試験で高い点が取れなかった人達です。だから何とか助けようと思いました。

一方、他の生徒の中には、態度もよくなく、出席も少なく、全く勉強していなく、結果として点数が悪かった人もいます。この場合一切助けません。トンガの先生は全部助けるようですが・・・・。Torojiro先生の場合、（幸運な事に？）彼らは卒業しないでもう一年勉強できます。来年努力できるかも知れませんね。

　厳しく見えるかも知れませんが、日本で小学生に毎週の小テストをやっていた時の方が、トンガの教員養成学校で大切な学期末テストを与えている今回より厳しかったです。なんて変な状況でしょう・・・。

教員養成学校はトンガでたった一つだし、先生になる人は厳格でなければならないので、Torojiro先生はもうこれ以上怠け者になれません。

まぁ努力できない者は落ちる！これが当然にしておかないと頑張る人の価値がなくなりますからね。

 

↑After that, I checked 50 students notebooks. I had already finished marking the final exam papers but I have not completed their evaluations of semester 2. This weekend I will finish them (85 students’ evaluations).

その後、５０人分のノートをチェックしました。試験の採点は全部終わっていますが、評価がまだ完成しておりません。この週末８５人分の評価を終わらせます。

2nd Dec. Graduation ceremony

１２月２日　卒業式だぞ

 

↑It was the TIOE graduation ceremony today. The students, who were year 3 last year, received a diploma. It looks like strange, because the year 3 students (the last year’s students now) can get their diploma next year. I don’t know why, but only the TIOE students are doing like that.

今日は教員養成学校の卒業式でした。去年３年生だった生徒達が卒業証書を受け取ります。ちょっと変ですね。今３年生（最終学年）の生徒達は来年卒業証書をもらえるのです。何故かは分かりませんが、教員養成学校だけそうなっています。

 

↑My friend Paea, who is Miwa’s son and professional coconut tree climber, received his diploma as well. Now he is working for the Tongan Side School and in charge of class 5. This is Paea and Miwa, who used to be my counterpart and the first abacus volunteer in Tonga.

Miwaさんの息子で椰子の木登りのプロPaea君も卒業証書を受け取りました。彼は今トンガサイドスクールで５年生の担任をしています。Paea君とMiwaさん。Miwaさんは初代そろばん隊員で、かつてカウンターパートでした。

↑Oh, Litea! I met her in ‘Eua last week. She changed her job and is working as a bank officer now.

　お～Liteaさん！彼女とは先週エウアで会いました。仕事を変えて銀行で働いていましたね。

 

↑During the ceremony, of course we could watch a Tongan dance. The girl standing in the front is Leata, who is my abacus student, and the third girl is Sila, who is CDU worker, Monika’s daughter. Their dance was pretty good.

　式の途中、もちろんトンガダンスが見られました。１番前に立っているのはLeataさんでそろばんクラスの生徒。３番目の女の子はSilaさんで、CDUで同僚のMonikaさんの娘です。彼女達のダンスはとてもよかったです。

１２月１日　自転車と一緒に泳いだぞ～

It was raining almost the whole day. When it became a light rain in the morning, I managed to get CDU, but after that I could not went outside anymore.

ほとんど１日中雨が降っていました。朝少し小降りになった時、何とかCDUに着きました。しかしそれから全く外に出られませんでした。

　湖を通り通り抜ける事に成功しました。よくやった！ ところでこれはそんなに珍しくないです。毎回雨が激しく降るたびに、トンガの道はこのようになります。

１１月２９日　特に無しだぞ

 I came back from ‘Eua with Kimika. We had lunch together, and then I started working at CDU. It was quite a normal day.

I think if I have nothing special, I don’t have to write a blog. In spite of that, I can’t help writing my blog. I may be addicted to it.

Kimikaさんとエウアから帰ってきました。お昼を一緒に食べました。そしてCDUで仕事を始めました。いたって普通の日でした。

特に何も無ければ、ブログを書く必要がないと思います。しかし、意に反してブログを書かずにはいられません・・・ブログ中毒かも知れません・・・。
